Library in the MakingCrafting a Space for the Cultivation of Bookbinding

	Tällberg, Sweden

Master’s (Syn)thesis

A bookbindery sits on an island off the coast of Siljan lake in Sweden, a place for gathering the knowledge, materials, and crafts that bridge between book and building. Books and architecture both stand as age-old manifestations of memory, aggregating and holding pieces of the collective consciousness to become contextual time capsules. Their interconnectedness is emphasized through architecture’s capacity to hold books physically, and through books’ capacity to hold architecture within two-dimensional representations.

The bookbindery serves as the point of convergence between these connections, imagining a space for the binding of books and the holding of artifacts, while the
design methodology explores alternative modes of representation through bookbinding experiments. Book and building are thus bound through the development of the project, as well as the materials, tectonics, and atmosphere of the space. The final drawings are housed in a tome that brings the reader into direct physical contact with the project, linking the experiential values of the building into the materials and tactility of the book.

The bindery centers around the ritual of the bookbinding practice. The spaces establish the process that takes a book from raw materials to a finished product, and beyond that into its preservation for the future.
The aumbry, a sacred chamber housing the most precious books of the bookbinder, sits at the center of the
bindery, surrounded by translucent glass treated with bast fibers. This space accumulates the work of the bookbinder in a physical manifestation of the time, effort, and technique of the craft, not only the contents of the tomes but the physical objects themselves embodying
this knowledge.

Material testing for the project took shape as the harvesting and processing of tree bark into pulp from which to make paper. Bark from stripped red spruce trees was sorted through to select the bast fibers and soaked in water to make the separation of the outer bark easier. Paper can be made from these inner fibers of the bark, also known as the “liber.” The root word of library is the latin liber, tying the idea of the physical library and its contents to the material memory of paper and its source: trees.

The final step in the thesis was to craft the book. As this project sought to bridge book and building, the representation of the bindery through a physical tome is the culmination of the semester’s work. The reading of the book connects the reader to the building, pulling them through the story of the work and intimately communicating the core ideas. Physical bookbinding tests throughout the semester led to a book format that allows the shifting of a pages order and encourages interaction with the work throught the unfolding and turning of pages.

The scavengers of the world have long been collectors, gathering refuse and giving it a new purpose. The Urban Scavenger explores a different kind of scavenging, revaluing unwanted materials through the development of a typology for a mobile repair workshop. A work of salvage in form and function, this assemblage of debris drives through cities, collecting discarded matter and repurposing it to develop a practice of care. Workshops are hosted where people can access the knowledge and tools necessary to repair their own objects, continuing the cycle of salvage.

This research explores materials defining design as a means of showcasing new potentials in construction offcuts, debris, or scraps. There is a current tendency for architects to romanticise ideas of reuse, as found in the concept of the bricoleur; what was once a position of gritty determination and necessity has been redefined as an artistic endeavour. A pragmatic approach, born of the materials-at-hand, disrupts the current discourse that defines materials as secondary to the concept, repositioning the value of discarded materials.

Through the design process, the material properties challenge current ideals of aesthetics and influence tectonic decisions. By studying abstract interdisciplinary inquiries into waste alongside the practical applications, the piece seeks to exchange the positioning of these materials from undesirable instead to integral within architectural practice.

An interactive model was developed and fabricated as a discussion device in workshops for the Fleksible Fællesskaber (en: Flexible Communities) research project. A collaboration between the National Museum and Arkitektskolen Aarhus, the project explores the social and spatial elements of communities in social housing units in Denmark. The model serves as a visualization tool in discussions with residents to discover the potential of between spaces in apartments as new areas for interaction and socialization.

“Today, public housing areas face new challenges as well as expectations to maintain and strengthen social and environmental sustainability. Welfare tasks previously managed or carried out by the public sector increasingly involve local communities through decentralised planning, local co-creation, decentralisation and volunteer work.”

The moveable modules illustrate various methods for opening up spaces and increasing connections between private and public areas. To generate atmosphere in the abstract model, perspective sketches of different rooms in an apartment can be inserted or removed. Small objects add life and a personal touch, referencing the collection of furniture and decorations that often fill hallways and stoops. Residents at workshops are encouraged to test different layouts in the model to exercise creative control over spatial possibilities.

Presencing the Cosmos Through Architecture of PlaceA Cosmological Garden on the Great Plains of Colorado

Fremont Butte, ColoradoFifth-Year Diploma Project

A cosmological garden is situated within the Great Plains of Colorado, next to the Fremont Butte. Its artifacts, a rainwater reservoir, observation tower, and series of seed vaults, embody the cosmos through a gathering of resources, of geometries, of atmospheres, and of natural phenomena, concurrently reminding humans of their
insignificance and providing points of reference for their
existence on earth.

The monumental rain reservoir bridges the horizon in dialogue with the nearby butte, its interior chamber generating revelatory moments through aperture and reflection. The array of seed vaults embed in the earth distributed across the site, the pyramidal roof of each intimate vessel holding the promise of growth. The observation tower reaches for the heavens as a beacon
on the landscape, elevating wanderers closer to the untouchable celestial realm. These spaces create an observatory for the interpretative and scientific systems of nature. Wind, rain, and celestial bodies intersect with narratives of human experience that span time and place, embodied in the architecture as a microcosm of natural phenomena and their relationship with humankind.

The rainwater reservoir is a monumental space on the site, bridging the horizon between heaven and earth as it collects the precious resource of rain from the sky and stores the water. While the architecture straddles the ground plane above and below, visitors ambulate along the horizon line, a cultivated plane of human occupation. Passageways along the N-S axis draw visitors into compressed darkness and channel them across threshold of water before releasing them into a grand space. The pathway remains narrow however, a metal grated scaffold, the only bridge to the rain chamber, allows a visual expansion. Over the years, the framed path will be immersed as the water level rises.

The first forty-three seed vaults are arranged across the site, the tips of their roofs peeking above the field of milkweed, suggesting the presence of something buried. The pyramids project about eight feet, with the main vault room buried within the earth.

The rammed earth walls of the seed vaults embed in the earth, becoming a base for the pyramidal roof that pierces the ground like an emerging shoot in spring. The frame of the pyramid is enclosed by panels, with two pieces of the pyramidion folding down in a gesture towards the sky.

Center for Art and ArtistsParking Garage Renovation

	Hamburg, Germany

Fall Semester Fourth Year, Exchange at TU Braunschweig
A renovation of an existing parking structure was an opportunity for students to decide and develop a program. While the city of Hamburg has existing art museums, they are mostly historical and do not provide opportunities for emerging artists to work and display
their art. This project explores a center for the arts with space for art viewing and creation. The primary intervention is a central atrium which cuts through the existing concrete slabs and removes the spiral car ramp as a means of letting in light. Bridges which span this atrium then connect the spaces of the building both visually and physically, and become an opportunity for a dynamic viewing of the art.

The ground floor houses the more public programs, such as the welcome area and shop for artists to sell their work, as well as a small cafe overlooking the canal. The rest of the floors are spaces for art display, with slab removed on the third and fifth floor for the display of taller works of art. The central fourth floor is where the studios and workshop facilities are located for the artists. Balconies and windows periodically pierce the wall of the circular atrium end for viewing of hanging artworks which might occupy this space.

The bridges and balconies are made of CLT as the permanent fixtures of the architecture. The studio spaces, on the other hand, are separated by a movable wall system consisting of screens of stretched fabric over wood framing. This provides an opportunity for studios to be joined for artists working on bigger projects, groups of artists, or even neighboring artists who wish to collaborate with one another. Such flexibility is also found in the movable art display walls, so that gallery space can be expanded or reduced for different exhibitions. These simple, warm materials make clear where the architecture is intervening in the existing structure, while leaving the emphasis on the art on display.
