An archive for the work of Studio 2D became an opportunity to bring the on-site work of the studio into the school. The modified cabinet of curiosities serves as a framework for the knowledge of Studio 2D. The models and mock-ups are not only objects, but manifestations of our experiences as students test and research. While early sketches imagined an Alice in Wonderland-like experience of entering an enclosed space, the project developed into an open framework. To accomodate the two-week time frame, a flexible structural system allows for expansion of the construct.

Entry into the archive is articulated through a raised floor and stepping stones. This also generates a feeling of separation between the archive space and the surrounding project room.

The learning process is evidenced in the way the archive is constructed. New ways of processing wood and lashing experiments were performed as a part of the design and construction. The joints are doweled so students could experiment with ways of joining wood with no hardware. The various tests performed during the design process find home on the shelves of the archive, contributing to the cycle of learning, making, and documenting. As more mock-ups are constructed for other Studio 2D projects, they can be added to the archive.
